The Good Letter #31

Q

Wow, it says a lot about your company and your business philosophy that I get a personal reply from you! I have followed your career with admiration and respect. BTW, all of your support staff that I have been in contact with have been superb! Shawn Billings calling me in response to an email question on a Saturday night was icing on the cake & Kelly Bellis's (known him for years) manuals & videos are invaluable.

Just as background as to the type of customer I am, I'm half of a two PLS shop with no other employees. We do almost exclusively boundary surveys & municipal permitting. Our area has recent LIDAR coverage and Maine OGIS has published 2' contours, so that type of mapping work has greatly diminished until the client needs 1' intervals. Our "average" survey covers maybe 5 acres. Our largest boundary survey to date was about 500 acres. We rarely travel more than 45 minutes from the office. None of the local municipalities we prepare permits for require reproducible geographic information. There is almost no construction layout work. Most of the area towns have no infrastructure such as sewer, water, or gas lines. Only one or two towns have even a rudimentary GIS system in place. I am familar with the dozen or so surveyors within a hour's drive and would say that their situations are very similar to mine.

I am very much enjoying these units and greatly appreciate the extended testing time! I dread the email message that says the time is up. Due to operator (me) error on mutiple days, I have not had as much success with using them productively as some have posted. We purchased a used Topcon GR3 setup a little over a year ago, but I consider myself a very novice RTK user. BTW, I have let some people know that the Topcon set is for sale. I'm sure you can understand that I must balance trying out new equipment against billable time and completion schedules.

I am so glad to here that the new screen is a huge improvement. Yesterday, finding that I forgot to charge the base station (more operator error), I tried to use the cell phone to connect to the Maine DOT's service. My assigned user name and password contain both an upper case and lower case "a". The shift function was only very occasionally working and the "a" just wasn't available . . . get the "z" no matter where I tried touching.

I have rambled enough. Thank you for your comments on "points". I do realize that there are many different stakeholders with different needs such as a "cut sheet".

Looking forward to being a proud owner . . . at least someday.

A

Javad:

Thanks a lot for your comments.
The new screen solves the problem of inconsistent touches on keypads and others.
Keep your comments coming.
